On‐site water management comprises of the management of mine water and rainfall runoff from surface facilities and infrastructure. The principal uses of water at RUM are for coal preparation, mining and dust suppression, which use water extracted from the mine workings, recovered tailings water, surface run‐off, water transferred from Ravensworth Operations and water accessed through surface water allocations. RUM imports water from Ravensworth Operations in preference to extracting water from the Hunter River.
The RUM site is operated on a nil‐discharge basis under the NSW Protection of the Environment (Operations) Act 1997, and therefore the intention of the water management system is to maximise the recycling and re‐use of water. Achievement of this objective has been made easier by the recent connection of RUM into other XCN operations.
A monthly water quality sampling program is completed across the RUM site.
